Tree Inspections

Site of Trunk Failure

Tree inspections are usually part of tree care estimates. When we provide an estimate, we always do a visual inspection. Visual inspections from the ground can reveal faulty areas such as trunk or branch damage. Damaged areas are always more prone to failure. Visual inspections from the ground can indicate that a more thorough inspection is needed.

Tree Inspection: Faults Visible from the Ground

Sometimes, trunk faults are not obvious from the ground. The tree in these photos is a great example of how a hidden trunk fault can cause a major failure. The hole at the lower part of the photo to the left would be obvious from the ground. The hole at the top of the photo, in the crotch, may not be apparent from the ground. This Beech tree has several significant leads just above the failure site. Because there is a hole at this junction, it provides a clue why the tree failed. This hole created a cavity. As a result, rot developed creating a faulty point in the trunk.

The Site of the Fault

These two photos are of the actual site of the area where the tree failed.

When are Tree Inspections Necessary?

As you can see from the photo, this was a very large tree. When it fell, it damaged a lot of other trees. Luckily this happened in the woods. If you have any big trees close to your house, it might be worth getting tree inspections that are more extensive than a visual look. This type of inspection can be completed by someone climbing up the tree or someone using a lift truck to access the trunk and canopy of the tree. This type of inspection would reveal issues that are not visible from the ground.
